Eagle River Lions Club

PO Box 771046

Eagle River, Alaska  99577

The roots of the Eagle River Lions club began in 1928 when the Seattle Lions Club sponsored the very first Alaskan Lions Club in the city of Juneau.   Unfortunately, three years later it had disappeared, but the seed had been planted and in 1944 District 49 was reborn for good.  That year, four new clubs were formed, one in Anchorage, another in Fairbanks, a third in Juneau, and a fourth in Ketchikan.  From these first beginnings growth was rapid and nearly continuous.  By 1960 District 49 had 20 clubs and 1,000 members.

Just a few years later the Eagle River Lions Club was chartered and for about 50 years now it has been a continuous and vital part of the Eagle River-Chugiak community.  The current membership (of more than 75 members) contribute their time, money, and talents making their community a better place in which to live.  Members are men and women, young and old, civilian and military, business people, oil company personnel, retirees, and others from all parts of the community.  In 1992 and 1993 they were awarded the Lions District 49A "Club and President" of the year award---a testament to the organization and the people in it.

The Eagle River Lions own and operate a 40 acre community recreation park which includes six baseball diamonds, many tennis courts, two football fields, a basketball court, 12 horseshoe pits, and numerous picnic tables and cooking pits----all open to the general public.  For many years now, the Lions of Eagle River have sponsored a giant family oriented community Fourth of July "Independence Day Fireworks Event." Annually, thousands come and enjoy the free kids games, prizes, live music, skydivers, food booths, and fireworks.  It’s quite a show and something the whole community enjoys.

Since 1976, the Eagle River Lions have been the proud sponsor and charter organization of Boy Scout Troop 230.  They have watched over us from our beginning, annually helping us with funds for equipment purchases, provided a great place for meetings and to store our troop gear, and give guidance and leadership that has served hundreds if not thousands of Alaska boys.  Troop 230 is grateful for such a wonderful club to have as our charter organization!
